Norfolk & Western Railroad
The Norfolk & Western Railroad was started for the purpose of hauling
coal from the coal mines of Virginia. It's headquarters was located in
Roanoke, VA. There they built a large shop and in 1883 began producing
their own locomotives and rolling stock. Norfolk & Western also purchased
locomotives from manufacturers like Baldwin, Schenectady and Richmond.
Shortly after the turn of the century the Norfolk & Western Railroad had
amassed about three hundred steam locomotives, most of them 2-8-0's.
The Norfolk & Western was one of the last major American railroads
to use steam locomotives for commercial hauling. O. Winston Link
photographed steam locomotives of the Norfolk & Western Railroad
quite extensively.
